Cluedo
The classic 'murder mystery' game where players try to determine "whodunnit!" Where, how and who? It sounds simple but this is an engrossing game that entertains and enthralls. Ideal even if there's only two players, Cluedo games last 'just about right' with the average game of Cluedo lasting around 45 minutes to an hour. It can depend how many players are on the mystery hunt.

What is Cluedo?
Most Cluedo players stick loyally to the traditional, original version but there are now LOADS of different, quirky variations on this classic board game. Want a game of Batman Cluedo? No problem. Other themes applied to Cluedo editions include Dungeons & Dragons, Harry Potter, Scooby Doo and The Big Bang Theory. If you haven't played Cluedo in a long time, give it another go – there's been a new suspect added into the mix!
Fun Fact: In North America, Cluedo is simply called "Clue" – but the game’s British roots run deep!
Who Invented Cluedo?
Cluedo is definitely a British-born board game, invented by Birmingham-based Anthony E. Pratt. If you were playing the original game, you’d actually be playing "The Great New Detective Game" – Cluedo's original title! Ownership has since crossed the Atlantic and the game is now owned by Hasbro.
When Was Cluedo Invented?
- Invented by Anthony E. Pratt in 1943; patent granted in 1947.
- First manufactured/published in the UK in 1949 (Waddingtons).
- Called "Clue" in North America and published by Parker Brothers (now Hasbro).
- Delayed after WWII due to shortages of game materials.
How to Play Cluedo – Rules
- Players take the roles of suspects in a murder at a mansion, moving room to room to solve the crime.
- The object is to deduce three things: Who committed the murder, Where it happened, and What weapon was used.
- Cards representing all suspects, rooms, and weapons are shuffled; one of each is secretly placed in the case file envelope (the solution).
- The rest of the cards are dealt to players. Players move their pawns and make "suggestions" (accusations) about the murder.
- Other players must disprove suggestions by secretly showing a relevant card if they have one.
- When a player thinks they know the solution, they make a final accusation. If correct, they win. If wrong, they’re out (but continue disproving).
- 2–6 players. Typical play time: 45–60 minutes.
Main Characters/Suspects
- Miss Scarlett (always goes first!)
- Colonel Mustard
- Mrs. White (sometimes replaced by Dr. Orchid in modern versions)
- Reverend Green (Mr. Green in US editions)
- Mrs. Peacock
- Professor Plum
- Dr. Orchid (since 2016 in place of Mrs. White)

Strategy & Tips
- Take careful notes on what cards are revealed to you – a detective's notebook is your best weapon!
- Try to visit as many rooms as possible quickly to maximize your suggestions.
- Watch other players’ movements for subtle clues about what they’re seeking or avoiding.
- Don’t reveal too much with your own suggestions—sometimes bluffing can throw off your opponents.
- Block other players' access to certain rooms if you can!
- In larger games, forming (temporary!) alliances can help share information.
Retro Tip: In some editions, the secret passages are key to winning—don’t neglect them!
