What is Scrabble?
Scrabble is the world's most iconic word game! Two to four players draw letter tiles and lay down words to rack up points on a grid board-with bonuses for using tricky letters and strategic placement. It's a brilliant mix of language, logic, and a bit of luck. Can't find an opponent? Try solo mode and beat your own high score!
Fun Fact: Scrabble is so beloved that there are official Scrabble world championships, and it's estimated that one-third of American homes have a Scrabble set!
History of Scrabble
- Invented in 1938 by American architect Alfred Mosher Butts (great name, great game!).
- The game was first called 'Lexiko' and then 'Criss-Crosswords' before becoming Scrabble.
- First mass-produced in 1948 by James Brunot, who helped popularize the game in the US.
- Today Scrabble is published by Mattel (worldwide) and Hasbro (US/Canada).
How to Play Scrabble - Rules
- Each player draws seven letter tiles and replenishes their rack after every turn.
- Form words horizontally or vertically, connecting to existing words on the board.
- Score points for each letter used, with bonuses for special board squares (double/triple letter/word).
- Using all seven tiles in one turn is called a 'bingo' and earns you a 50-point bonus!
- The game ends when all tiles are drawn and a player uses up their last tile, or no moves are possible.
- Highest score wins-dictionary disputes included for free!
Who Invented Scrabble?
American architect Alfred Mosher Butts (still an awesome name) invented Scrabble, proving that architects build more than buildings! He combined his love of words and numbers to create a game that's now played in over 120 countries.
When Was Scrabble Invented?
While the world was preparing for war, Mr. Butts invented Scrabble back in 1938. Mattel is the publisher today (except in North America, where Hasbro holds the rights). Fun fact: Hasbro tried to buy Mattel in 2017-2018 but was rebuffed!

Strategy & Tips
- Max out your points: hit double/triple word and letter squares whenever you can.
- Memorize short, weird words (QI, XI, ZA, JO) for impressive scores with tough tiles.
- Don't be afraid to swap tiles if you're stuck with a rack full of vowels or consonants.
- Block your opponents' access to premium squares-defense matters in Scrabble!
- Always be on the lookout for a 'bingo'-using all seven tiles at once is a game-changer.
Retro Tip: The highest-scoring Scrabble word ever played in competition was "CAZIQUES" for a jaw-dropping 392 points!
